www.davidcushing.com

In his recent Symphony Hall debut as soloist in Beethoven's Ninth Symphony being "dynamite with spine-tingling resonance", Bass David M. Cushing has begun apromising career in the American music scene. This past season he performed Colline in Puccini's La Boheme with Opera Columbus. He reprised both Dr. Grenvil in Verdi's La Traviata and the title role in Donizetti's Don Pasquale with Opera Colorado. After a wonderful concert with the Key West Pops, he undertook the virtuosic role of Osmin in Mozart's The Abduction from the Seraglio in which he was called "sensational" and "audience favorite". The Boston Globe said "his bathyspheric bass is a marvel, and he put his towering stage presence to gleeful use". Following tremendous success in Boston, Mr. Cushing then debuted at Opera Theater St. Louis as the Bonze in Puccini's Madame Butterfly. The 2006-2007 season brought great success with performances of Tom in Verdi's Un Ballo in Maschera both with Boston Lyric Opera and Opera Colorado. Also was Basilio in Rossini's Il Barbiere di Siviglia with Newton Symphony and Masetto in Mozart's Don Giovanni with the Florentine Opera. Before that he sang Maometto in Rossini's L'assedio di Corinto with the Baltimore Opera in which the Washington Post said "David Cushing gave him (Maometto) a core of steel surrounded by a great deal of warmth."
In the 2005-2006 season he was heard as Ligniere in Dichiera's Cyrano in a workshop at Michigan Opera Theater. Also with MOT was his Cappadocian and 5th Jew in Strauss' Salome. He was also heard as "excellent and vivid" as Dr. Grenvil in Verdi's La Traviata, Palemon in Massenet's Thais in which he was "solid and sonorous" and Raymond in Donizetti's Lucie de Lammermoor in which his bass was called "rich, impressive and voluminous", all with Boston Lyric Opera. He also took the assignment of covering the great Bass-baritone, Simon Estes in a production of Don Giovanni.
His 2004-2005 season brought his Mikado with Lake George Opera called "the vocal highlight; a sheer delight; with the smoothness of a born comic." He "delivered a potent and compelling 'Qui tollis' (with his) arresting and lush, sizeable voice" in Pioneer Valley Symphony's Lord Nelson Mass. Deemed, "excellent, a bottomless and sepulchral bass" was his King in Boston Lyric Opera's production of Portman's The Little Prince, directed by Francesca Zambello. "Inexhaustible; and "captivating" was his Figaro in Le Nozze di Figaro with Granite State Opera, "acted and sang to perfection".
The 2003-2004 season brought great success as Bottom in Britten's Midsummer Night's Dream at Opera North "stole the show; brilliant, proving that nothing was going to keep his strong, expressive, humorous performance, or strong bass voice in mystery; a quality 'black bass' of such striking resonance", a performance which too earned him a nomination for lead male of the season by Opera Online. With Boston Lyric Opera he was deemed "outstanding" for his portrayal of Monterone in Verdi's Rigoletto, and "some of the best singing" for his Angelotti in Puccini's Tosca, conducted by Keith Lockhart.
He performed at Tanglewood and in Jordan Hall as a standout as the Second Lion and the Oldest Devil in Lukas Foss' Griffelkin with Boston Modern Orchestra Project, roles he recorded on the Chandos label.
Mr. Cushing has also performed soloist duties in Haendel's Messiah, Dvorak's Stabat Mater, the Requiems of Brahms, Faure, and Mozart, Haydn's Lord Nelson Mass, Mozart's Coronation Mass, Beethoven's Mass in C, Bruckner's Te Deum, and Schubert's Mass in G.
